What makes the perfect Teen Moisturiser?🤨

We’ve spent the last year creating one - meet our NEW Featherlight Moisturiser! - so here’s what we think!

What they DO need:

✔️To be a light - Teen/tween skin is naturally well-balanced, so they don’t really need a lot of moisture (lucky them!). Look for gel and water cream moisturisers (bonus: they are delicious to use).

✔️Yes, to ingredients that protect their skin barrier! - Teen/Tween skin is thinner than adult skin and produces less sebum up till age 12, so it’s super-easy to upset it’s natural barrier. Look for Glycerin, Hyaluronic acid and Ceramides on the ingredients list.

✔️Add Anti-oxidents - These wonder ingredients will protect their delicate skin from environmental damage from pollution, UV rays and blue light from their screens (Vitamin E and Aloe Vera are genius at this).

✔️Non-comedogenic is a must - Translation: it contains no ingredients that will block their pores!

✔️Fragrance-free, too - Because teen/tween skin tends to be sensitive and fragrance can cause irritation or allergies.

✔️Anti-bacterial is a bonus - it’s going to be sitting on their skin all day, so if it can zap spots and downsize irritation while it’s there, with anti-bacterial ingredients like Witch-Hazel, that’s a win-win!

What they DON’T need:

⛔️Steer clear of heavy creams, even if their skin is dry - traditional moisturisers, packed full of oils and heavy emolliants, can overload young skin and cause breakouts.

⛔️They don’t need anti-aging ingredients - Vitamin C, Retinol and Peptides are definite no-nos and can actually irritate and damage young skin.

⛔️Super expensive moisturisers - Teen/tween needs are relatively simple. It’s the snazzy, mostly anti-aging, ingredients that up the prices. Ditto glitzy packaging and marketing campaigns.

Does my teen/tween need a moisturiser?🤔We get asked this question almost daily, so we thought we’d put down our thoughts here.

First, the arguments against (yes, there really are some!):

☺️Teen/tween skin is naturally well-balanced, so, unless they’re doing stuff to upset that balance, they don’t need a lot of extra moisture.

🧴Traditional moisturisers - the ones made for adults - can clog their pores and overload their skin, leading to breakouts and irritation.

☁️Some dermatologists believe that over-moisturising can actually upset the skin’s ability to exfoliate and hydrate itself and lead to sensitivity and dullness. Uh oh!

Who knew?!

And the arguments FOR teens/tweens moisturising? Here goes:

🐰Moisturising helps protect the delicate balance of their skin, which is naturally thinner than adult skin. Plus, children don’t produce adult levels of protective sebum until they are at least 12, so it’s incredibly easy to upset that balance.

🏑Their lifestyle might be drying out their skin - hours on cold hockey or football pitches; early mornings at swimming club; being over-zealous with their cleansing. Moisturising can soothe and replace lost moisture.

⛑Moisturisers help to prevent environmental damage to their skin because it acts as a protective barrier to things like weather, wind, central heating, even pollution.

💦They might have dry skin conditions like eczema or rosacea, where moisturising can help.

🤗They might simply love the idea of another step in their skincare routine. Something that is going to make their skin feel great. Something that will boost their glow.
